Awesome story, Benjamin! I relate so much with watching the dwindling savings account, thinking about our burn rate, doing the quick math, and thinking, “this isn’t sustainable.” But the thing we can’t account for? One: we can’t predict the great surprises. Everything can change in a minute for the better, and we would never know this if we didn’t hang in there long enough. And two, our attitude and resilience become so much stronger. It’s almost like, if we want it bad enough, the universe will show us a path. We just need to keep going.
May I ask why you felt Germany was no longer for you? I was stationed in Darmstadt back in the beginning of the millennium. (US Army) It was actually one of my favorite places.
I paid 42% taxes, and wasn't getting much in return. I started several businesses there, and there was an immense lack of support for entrepreneurs. Apart from that, I didn't like the climate (I thrive in warm weather).
Fair enough. I didn't have to pay taxes. We even had fuel coupons that allowed us to pay US prices at ESSO stations. Now I live in San Diego, CA. But I don't think the US will get better anytime soon. I've been considering moving abroad (again) and am trying to choose between Uruguay, Cypress, and Thailand.
I read an article about how it's pretty easy to set up a business in Cypress.
My dream is to spend a year traveling and see everything I’ve dreamed of for 68 years. I want to do this in 2027 as I enter my 70’s and I still can, physically. Big dream, limited budget, not a tourist. Wish me luck!
An excellent tale of perseverance. These are the moments that shape us. I have memories of landing in Nairobi for a 6 month internship - only to realize it was 12AM not PM, knew no one and I had no idea where I was staying yet. Even though I figured it out, I highly recommend planning better!! With help!!

Thanks man! We are so much more capable than we think we are!

Gern geschehen ;) Three great choices there, ideally you combine some of them to have a more robust global setup.
I LOVE this. Thanks for sharing… I have a feeling I’ll be resharing this when people tell me they need it all worked out before making “the leap.”
Thanks Miranda ;) It's always better to be prepared, but what I wanted to show here, is that even when you are barely, things can work out.
Very encouraging to read on NYE 2025. Congrats on your move and success in a new and apparently GREAT place. All the best in 2026.
Thanks so much! :) And Happy New Year!
