I have an autistic son who will be an adult in a few years. I've been having trouble finding anything online about what services are like in other countries and I'm not sure where to look. I can't even contemplate leaving the US unless I know there's someplace for him wherever we go.
Can you point me in the right direction or to someone who might know where I can look (or even HOW to look)?
Hey, thanks for asking this. I spent a little time digging and here is what I would do in your shoes. Places that look promising for your sons needs would be: Canada, UK, Australia, and Scandinavia (Sweden, Norway etc.). There is also a map called the "Autism-Europe's Interactive Map, which has local associations to around 40 countries. Apart from that, I would also check 1) Facebook Groups and 2) Reddit Groups (at first glance, there is quite a bit of info). The most important part would be 1) the Residency status that grants public health cover for your son, and 2) Eligibility rules for adult disability benefits (since he is turning 18 soon, right?). Does that help you (at least a little)?
Really nice overview of some off the beaten path (Georgia + Armenia) options! And very useful to have the children angle, not just retirees (a lot of the published materials focuses on retirees)β¦.
Nice information thanks for sharing now I know better
very welcome Cynthia, glad it helped you!
