Good point! Surely something to consider. Most of these spots have decent private healthcare at a fraction of Western prices, but it’s worth checking the local system and getting good travel insurance (like e.g Safety Wings). I might do a separate post just on that soon.
Thanks for this simple and straightforward breakdown. There’s a lot of this kind of thing on the stack but this post was the most accessible. Really. Thanks !
Of the countries listed, Colombia tends to be the most accessible for someone living on disability income. Their retirement visa doesn’t require a minimum age, and the income threshold is relatively low (around $1,000–1,100/month). If your disability income is consistent and documented, it could qualify.
Thailand is also possible if you meet the visa requirements, either through monthly income (around $2,000/month) or a bank deposit. Many people receive SSDI there without issues, and the cost of living is manageable in many areas.
Portugal, Mexico, and Indonesia are a bit stricter. Their long-term visa programs often ask for higher monthly income or formal pension documentation, which not all disability income meets.
Accessibility and healthcare quality vary by city, but with some research and local support, several of these places could work well.
good point! I might do a post on specifically on places, that aren't tropical. in the meantime, you can check out my post on 24 remote work visas to watch, there are quite a few places in there, which also have cold weather, such as Estonia, Japan, or Argentina https://www.clubcitizen.co/p/24-remote-work-visas-to-watch-in
This is a good guide. I wonder about healthcare/health risks in these places.

Do you know if any of these countries would welcome a disabled person with only disability income?
