About This Series
Welcome to the first edition of the Visa & Residency Brief, a new monthly update for Digital Citizen readers.
The world of visas, residencies, and cross-border tax rules is constantly changing. Governments (sometimes quietly) tweak policies that can impact where you live, how long you can stay, or how much you pay in tax.
This series is designed to keep you ahead of those changes.
Each edition includes:
New visa launches
Residency and immigration rule changes
Emerging trends and signals from around the world
A short insight or question to reflect on global living
This monthly update is here to help you stay up to date as global mobility rules shift, from new visas to changing residency and tax policies.
Let’s dive in …
New Visas Launched
Philippines: Digital Nomad Visa Now Official
The Philippines has launched a 12-month digital nomad visa (renewable once), expected to go live by the end of June. Applicants must be over 18, earn foreign income, and show valid health insurance.
The good news is that you won’t be taxed locally if your income comes from abroad. This move positions the Philippines as a serious Southeast Asian contender, especially for English-speaking nomads looking beyond Bali and Thailand.
The visa was signed into law earlier this year and is expected to open for applications by end of June 2025.
Deep Dive coming soon.
Residency & Immigration Rule Changes
Spain: Income Threshold Raised
Spain’s digital nomad visa now requires €2,762/month in income, up 4.4% from last year. If you're applying or renewing, be sure your documentation reflects this.
Turkey: Minimum Income Set at $3K
Turkey has clarified that its digital nomad visa now requires a minimum foreign income of $3,000 per month. While still affordable and attractive, it’s no longer the low-cost-carrier option it once was.
Croatia: Income Increase for Nomad Visa
In May 2025, Croatia raised its digital nomad visa minimum income requirement to €3,295/month, to align with national wage growth. This is a confirmed policy change, so if you’re applying, update your documentation.
Emerging Trends
Kyrgyzstan: Digital Nomad Visa in the Works
Kyrgyzstan passed legislation in April to launch a digital nomad visa. The framework is in motion, but the launch date is still unconfirmed.
Nepal: 5-Year Nomad Visa in Development
Nepal is preparing to launch a digital nomad visa by 2026, as confirmed by The Kathmandu Post. It will offer one-year blocks, extendable up to five years. Benefits include bank account access, vehicle registration, and a simple 5% flat tax if you stay over 183 days per year.

One Question I’m Asking
What happens to your sense of self when you live in many countries?
It’s a bit like food. You grow up eating what you know. Then a new dish opens a door. The more you move, the more that happens.
Living globally expands your world but also softens your sense of certainty. You realize how much of your “self” was shaped by where you started. And how much of it is still up for reshaping.
There is privilege in having that choice. Something I feel deeply as someone born in the West. Many do not have the same access, and that awareness adds both gratitude and weight.
The self grows and at the same time it dissolves a little.
Because when you are constantly learning, you spend less time declaring who you are, and more time staying open to what else is out there.
Final Note
These monthly updates will eventually become part of the paid tier.
For now, I’m keeping them free so everyone can stay informed. If you are finding value in these breakdowns, consider upgrading.
